hey since i’m occasionally giving out adult advice. anyone wanna know my very adult and very boring and very sensible suggestion for grief gifts for friends and family when someone close to them dies

anthonycrowleymoved

alright. this is shamelessly stolen from my godparents when they did this when my grandma passed about ten years ago, and since then i’ve been on both sides of this and it’s surprisingly thoughtful and useful. this is particularly important when people are like, in charge of funeral prep, but anyone who just heard someone close to them just died is gonna be in a certain headspace, so it probably works regardless. people are gonna be sending cards and flowers and other very nice, but ultimately useless gifts.

don’t do that. go to the grocery store and order one of those deli party platters. the ones with like, four different kinds each of meats and cheeses, maybe some sides, and veggies, and bread, and condiments. get the vegetarian version if you know they’re vegetarians. whatever. you know better than i how many people are gonna be eating it, but guess maybe, like, four day’s worth of food.

because, here’s the thing. cards and flowers are very nice, and remind you that you’re in people’s thoughts. but you know what you just. don’t even want to think about when someone dies? making dinner. going to the grocery store. ordering takeout. whatever. you don’t want to have to think about food. you just want to eat in between planning a funeral and working through your grief.

without getting too into it, when my grandma died, we were thrown for a loop. and we ate nothing but what was on that goddamned deli platter for days. because it was quick and easy and fresh and tasted good and we didn’t have to think about food. and ten years later, i don’t remember those cards or flowers, but i sure as hell remember the deli platter.

so next time someone’s going through something, when a family member or close friend just passed. go to your nearest grocery store, and if you can, walk a deli platter over to their place. as soon as you can after you hear. they may look at you weird when you hand it to them, but trust me, in the long run they’re gonna thank you.

There's a reason the jewish tradition for mourning is that for the first week after someone dies, the immediate family doesnt do ANYTHING but mourn. No Cooking. No Cleaning. No Working. The community comes to handle those things. Bringing every meal, cleaning the mourner's house(s), etc.

This aint a new concept. its in fact very very old.

i really hate the hurf durf positivity memes that are like *~you are not a burden~* 😌☺️🙏 bitch yes i am. taking care of sick people is hard. putting up with and organizing your life and tasks around people who take ten times as long and one hundred times as much energy to do simple tasks is HARD. never being on time, abandoning plans, leaving early, not eating normal food, these are all things that make everyone else's life harder. I'm a burden! the point is that humans carry their burdens and always have and the way the species is designed makes this not just ethical but beneficial materially to everyone. saying disabled people "aren't a burden" is just erasing all the work caretakers do to keep us alive. the point is that everyone is entitled to be a burden, and even if you are never sick a day in your life you will still spend years at either end of your brief stint on earth being bothersome to someone else. that's normal

girl help there's people saying the multi-million dollar toy advertisement is going to save cinema

shesnake

this isn't about people hyperbolically expressing their excitement btw. the barbie marketing team is doing well promoting the film as a great work of costume and production design which is very fun and interesting I love behind the scenes shit like this but the state of the industry is so fucking bleak that people (mainly on film twitter) are genuinely surprised that actual physical sets were built for the movie as opposed to the cgi Disney uses for their own multi-million dollar toy advertisements. and I just. can you people please watch real movies. can you please try to find a movie to watch that isn't being pushed by your fucking algos like the barbie movie doing this is not going to save cinema it's YOU fucking watching and supporting actual movies made by people who have something to actually say

UPS has reached an agreement with the Teamsters union to equip its iconic brown delivery trucks with air conditioning for the first time for new units.

The agreement, announced by UPS on Tuesday, comes as the delivery giant and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters negotiate the terms of a new contract for more than 330,000 U.S. employees. (source)

Unions work, unionize.

hyliagirl42

They only just now got air conditioners?!?!?!

bjurnberg

Yeah it’s a huge win. Those trucks are death traps on a good day. A bunch of drivers died and more got severely ill last year from heat stroke. The temperature in the back of those vans is usually 10 degrees hotter than outside. It’s terrible, and I’m so proud of my union for how harshly they’re negotiating right now. We’ve got a bunch of smaller consessions already but this one was big.

This round of negotiations is difficult. The UPS Overlords are trying very hard to keep their billions of dollars in three pockets instead of spreading the wealth we (the workers) earned for them during the pandemic’s influx of home delivery. They’re trying to give us as little as possible and spinning the news articles to make it look like they’re super generous. Meanwhile almost everyone in my warehouse is on food stamps cuz we aren’t paid shit.

The UPS Teamsters Union are currently voting on whether or not to go on strike in August, so prepare for that. Stock up on essential supplies, just in case. We’ll let everyone know how to support us when the time comes.

This job is my first time being part of a union and I never wanna go back to not having one. It’s amazing to have so much fighting power.

48hr tumblr blackout proposal

tumblr mobile has seadily become near unusable these past few updates. not just from a user experience perspective (which is important enough in itself) but also from an accessibility perspective.

examples include the new way the image viewer works (if you can call it "working"), the tumblr live button replacing the profile button, and that newly created blogs will be forced to have their main dashboard tab be the 'for you' page.

the demands of the protest would be along the lines of:

  • reverse the recent image viewer update
  • scrap the new users 'for you' page default setting
  • let us turn off tumblr live indefinitely
  • increase efforts against spam / porn bots
  • make reporting abuse and hate speech as easy as reporting as reporting spam
  • let us go nuts show nuts again... for real this time
  • commit to improving usability and accessibility, and listening to users!
  • (suggestions welcome!)

to protest against these usability issues, and inspired by the recent reddit blackout, i propose a 48 hour blackout (where you don't use tumblr at all). preferably of both mobile and web (since web has problems too) but mobile is the focus here.

I suggest the 48 hours between the 30th of June to the end of the 1st of July.

this marks the end of pride month (for the "queerest place on the internet") and the start of disability month (since accessibility is a massive issue here).

tumblr office is in San Francisco, USA, so the times and dates will be calculated using their time zone (PDT).

you can find out the times and dates for your timezone here.

i can't afford to blaze this post so please spread it around as much as possible! protests only work if significant numbers show up!

transmascanine

tumblr rejected the blaze campaigns for this post because they know it would hurt them. let's make this an indefinite blackout - it's the best way to get results.

(so the blackout would be from June 30th onwards)

staff statements, politician answers, disconnect

i do have to premise, many staff-involved posts are going to be from cyle's blog or written by him. some have other staff contributing to the answer! but he appears to be a sort of main front-end developer, so he's quite literally the most visible staff member, to me at least.

thanks for your feedback! no.

make it accessible? nah, no thank you.

pride month reminder that trans men r not ur human meat shields. trans men deserve advocacy and safety.

unhinged-transmasc-man

Trans men are also not the people to trauma dump about how evil cis men can be. Trans men are not the people to project your hatred of men and masculinity onto. Reminder that being men is what makes us trans, and hating us for being men is transphobic.
